Peck, George (Fishing idea - 1901)
George Peck, who doesn’t like to get his feet wet, has this to suggest about fishing: "When I hear some of the boys talking about catching thirty-five or forty pound muskellunge with a rod and reel I sometimes think that the sport could be enjoyed on land. As an outfit, for instance, take a split bamboo or a steel rod, put 150 feet of line on a reel, and get a No. 9 spoon hook. Then hunt up a good sized pasture and find a particularly frisky calf, one of those jumping calves. Firmly attaché the spoon hook to the tail of the calf, and then demonstrate your skill in subduing the animal. The pasture ought to have a lot of stumps, which, by a small stretch of imagination, can take the place of snags, and as a result, you have the same conditions on land, and about the same chances of landing your calf as of landing your fish. The runs, leaps and jumps of the calf would very closely resemble the struggles of the fish to get away."
