Pinkerton Detective ( October - 1901)
Last Sunday a Pinkerton detective spent the day with Sheriff R. M. Campbell, and during the course of conversation with Mrs. Campbell she described Jas. Longton, the leader of the men held for blowing safes at Thorp, who broke jail and escaped some two months ago. At the close of her graphic description the detective slapped his knee and exclaimed, "I know that fellow, and have his photograph in my grip." He hunted up the photo and the legend on the back of it read something like this: "Ottawa Jim, expert cracksman, wanted by U. S. authorities for P. O. robberies and other crimes. Reward for him. Has served term in Mo. penitentiary and other prisons. Dangerous." So that Sheriff Campbell had a bigger bird in his keeping for a short time than he realized.
