Sheffer, Walter "Bill" (10 December 1921 - 8 September 2010) With Flag
Walter "Bill" Sheffer, 88, of Humbird passed away Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. He was born Dec. 10, 1921, in La Crosse, to John and Fanny (Hall) Sheffer.
Bill grew up and lived in La Crosse until he entered the Army in World War II in August of 1942. He served at Lawson General Hospital, Atlanta, GA, and Camp Pickett, VA. Bill also served overseas in England, France and Germany. He received an Honorable Discharge at Camp McCoy in 1946.
Bill was united in marriage to Dolores "Dolly" Thompson June 24, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church of La Crosse by Rev. Carl Pederson. Together they moved to Humbird.
Bill worked as a farmer and drove school bus for Alma Center schools. He was also a janitor at the school for 10 years and worked at Nelson Muffler of Neillsville for 10 years before retiring in 1982.
Bill enjoyed Harley Davidson Motorcycles, coffee time, Green Bay Packers and feeding the birds while sitting in the garage.
He was an active member of 63 years with the Humbird American Legion post #320, where he also served as commander for 10 years.
Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dolly; son, Richard (Brenda) Sheffer of Humbird; four grandchildren, Shelly, Todd, Mike and Douglas; six great-grandchildren, Kyle, Alisha, Zackary, Paige and twins Ryan and Riley; nephews, John Gust and Bernard Gust; and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Fanny; son, Kenneth Sheffer; grandchild, Travis; sisters, Irma and Lucille; brothers, Bernard and Donald.
Funeral services, with full military honors, were held Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton. Reverend John Kaplinski officiated. Burial was held in Angelo Cemetery, rural Sparta. Family and friends were invited for visitation Saturday, Sept. 11, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton. Family and friends were also invited for visitation Sunday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home.
Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
