Schutz, Gary Wayne (24 January 1957 – 4 March 2024)

Gary Wayne Schutz came into the world on January 24, 1957, and was born to be wild. He was the son of Henrietta Curtin (November 16, 1922- June 11, 1999) and Merwyn Schutz (March 8, 1924-October 31, 1996) and grew up in a large family on a farm between Granton and Chili. In his youth, he led football huddles where his teammates referred to him as “The Rabbi.” Gary was more wisecracking than wise when it came to school, leaving a semester before graduation in 1975. He would parlay his wisecracking skills into a career in entertainment. Gary could be found working at the Electric Rainbow as DJ Dash Stash. Listeners would hear Gary’s best Wolfman Jack voice come over the airwaves when working in radio as a DJ.

In the early 80’s he became a businessman and opened a couple bars. The Binge in Stratford was his first bar. His second bar was The Beat Street Tap in Marshfield. During his time as a bar owner, he threw wild parties and became infamous for his upside-down margaritas. It was during this time too that he also met the woman that would become the mother of his two sons.

Becoming a father shifted Gary’s partying lifestyle, caring for his sons became his main priority and he provided for them as best he could. It didn’t shift his wisecracking nature and larger than life personality though. On one such occasion he proved to his sons anything was possible by beating a man at least 3 times his size while wearing one of those funny sumo suits. Gary even paid $5 dollars to the man he beat because his own son had bet against him. After his youngest son graduated, Gary decided it was time to finish what he gave up on over three decades prior and earned his General Education Degree.

His interests included a range of entertainment. He boldly explored strange new worlds and often reminisced the works of Elvis. He discovered the anarchy of the old west and followed closely the continuing saga of the WWE’s Superstars. In the 90’s he sat down with his boys and watched the TGIF lineup with them and continued to watch the evolving family dynamics of television sitcoms through the years. He would also witness the most talented acts America has to offer and see who could outwit, outplay, and outlast in Survivor.

He persevered through countless health conditions and made light of it by giving himself nicknames like “Iron-Man” and “The Six Million Dollar Man.” His friends called him “Schutzie” and his sons called him “Big Daddy Cool.” In his later years, tending bar at The Swamp, he would be given the nickname of “The General” because of his resemblance to the insurance company mascot.

He always seemed to give more than he got. He left a lasting impression on a lot of folks in the area, whether it was as Gary, Schutzie, or to his sons Big Daddy Cool and will be missed. He departed from this world on the morning of March 4, 2024, with his family near him. Summing up, his life here leaves a lot unsaid, but his legend will live on through memories and the lives he touched. A remembrance will be held at T-bones Bar and Grill in the near future.

Those that have left before him were his parents; his brothers, Fred, Gordon, and Ron; and his niece, Nikki.

Surviving relatives include his sons, Kyle and Korey Schutz of Marshfield; siblings, Jeanie (Roger) Opelt of Chili, Nancy (Karl) Greenburg of Marshfield, Ken Schutz of Granton, Don Schutz of Pennsylvania, Dewey (Lisa) Schutz of Marshfield, Diane (Dave) Herron of Marshfield and Deb (Steve) Kohl of Granton along with a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
