Sherman, Leslie Lincoln (1891 - 30 January 1959)
Funeral services for Leslie Lincoln Sherman, 67, who died January 30, in Neillsville were held Monday from the Jensen Funeral Home at Hixton, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Merrillan. The Rev. Raymond Huss, Black River Falls, officiated, assisted by Harold Losey, Humbird, the Masonic Reader.
Leslie was born (massive ink blotch on page) 12, 1891. When he was a few months old he moved with his parents onto a farm near Bangor. In October, 1901, the Sherman family moved to Merrillan, where Leslie made his home the rest of his life.
He attended the grade school and was graduated from Merrillan High School in May, 1908. He taught school for three years, two years in Jackson County, and one in Steel County, N. D.
On August 26, 1914, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Sollberger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sollberger, Sr., in Neillsville. After the marriage they lived in Merrillan, where Mr. Sherman served as a rural mail carrier for 18 years. For 10 years he was associated with the Northwestern Railroad. In recent years he served as expressman.
He was a member of the Merrillan Methodist Church and sang in the church choir for 34 years. He took an active part in local affairs and served the village of Merrillan as assessor, marshal, president, and member of the school board for 11 years. He was also a member of the Masonic order, the Order of Eastern Star and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Mr. and Mrs. Sherman were the parents of two children, Harvey of Altoona, and Ruth, who died several years ago. In addition to his wife and son, he leaves three brothers: Roger of West Salem, Alfred of Wisconsin Rapids, and Russell of Crawford, N. J.
Pallbearers were: Charles Sindelar, Roy Reichenbach, Cecil Bowen, Bert Hanby, Gibson Gile and George Hoffman.
Relatives attending included: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sollberger and daughter, Mrs. Gavin Upton, Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. John Sollberger and Mr. and Mrs. William Sollberger, Columbia (Town of Hewett); Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baumel, Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sollberger, Athens; and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hoesly, Marshfield.
