Brett, David  06 SEPT  1946 - 26 AUG 2010)

David J. Brett, 63, Unity, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at his home in Unity, with his family present. Services will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Hansen-Shilling Funeral Home, Spencer. Christine Kurz will officiate.

David John Brett was born Sept. 6, 1946, on the farm of his parents, Helen and Robert Brett. He graduated from Loyal High School in 1965, and from technical school with a degree in electronic drafting in 1966. He was in the National Guard. He worked for Control Data and as a free-lance electronics engineer for several in the Twin Cities area. At the age 12 he started his honeybee project and sold honey door-to-door in Local communities. He eventually had a large honey business, at one time having more than 800 hives. He went to the Dominican Republic to work on a computer-packaging program. He was an Adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Stout in Menomonie. He returned home to his family farm where he took over the farm and cared for his aging parents until their deaths. He first started with dairy cows and then dairy sheep and goats and miniature horses. He made and sold goat milk and cheese at farmers’ markets and helped many others get started in the dairy goat business. With declining health, he and his wife, Ruth, bought a home on the northwest side of Unity. His hobbies included fishing, boating, spending time at the family cabin on the lake, movies, computer games, collecting farm toys, auctions, and in later years, going to antique shops.

He married Linda Robinson, Forest lake, Minn. They had four children and five grandchildren. They later divorced. In 2008, he married Ruth Rhoad, who survives him. Other survivors include his children from his first marriage, Dana (Kelly) Brett, Hammond, Tami (Bill) Grundy, Oakdale, Minn., Robin (Ben) Chambers, Rochester, Minn., and Amanda Brett, Lindstrom, Minn.; five grandchildren; two step-children, Marianne (Brandon Henderson, Rochester, Minn., and Sarah Rhoad, Mankota, Minn.; a brother Bob (Patty Kay) Brett, Williamsburg, Va., and their son Michael (Francis) Brett, Maryville, Calif.; and a sister Patti M. (Brett) Fuchs.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert and Helen Brett; and his grandparents, George and Alfrieda Emmel, and Wesley and Mabel Brett.
