Rau, George H. (July 31, 1926 - October 4, 2010)

George H. Rau, 84, of Dorchester, passed away Monday, October 4, 2010 at Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Medford.

George was born on July 31, 1926, in Dorchester, Wisconsin to Henry and Marie (Malchow) Rau.

He graduated from Dorchester High School in 1943. On September 19, 1953, George married Arlene Tauchen at Zion Lutheran, Stetsonville.

George enjoyed farming all of his life, first at home with his father and family and then along with Arlene when they began milking cows on their own in 1955. His proudest moments were shared with his family watching his children and grandchildren show dairy cattle, play sports and sharing his love of farming with his grandchildren. Serving others was always George’s first thought of the day as he was a member of Peace United Church of Christ and served on the church council, as a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir.

George also helped the local community by serving as a leader of the Dorchester and Liberty 4-H clubs, member of the Dorchester School Board, Lion’s Club and the Dorchester Park Board. As a farmer, George served on the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, Clark County Board, Consolidated Badger Milk Board, Dorchester Cemetery Board, American Dairy Association, Stetsonville Farmers Union Co-op, Badger Breeders, Wisconsin Master Farmers, Production Credit Association, along with the Clark County, Wisconsin and National Holstein Breeders Association.  In 1993, George and Arlene were recognized as Master Agriculture Award Recipient.

George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arlene, of Dorchester; and seven sons, David (Kitty) Rau of Dorchester, Richard (Peggy) Rau of Dorchester, Timothy (Jill) Rau of Abbotsford,  Wayne (Donna) Rau of Dorchester, Daniel (Chris) Rau of Colby, Randy (Patti) Rau of Dorchester and Patrick (Stephanie) Rau of Suamico. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  George is also survived by one brother, William (Joan) Rau of Dorchester; and one sister in-law, Shirley Rau of Franklin.

George was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Marie Rau; brothers Fredric, Melvin, Robert; and sister Anna Rau.

Memorials will be established in his name for Peace United Church of Christ and the Dorchester Park.

His funeral service will be held Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Peace United Church of Christ in Dorchester at 12 p.m. The Reverend Bonnie Jacque-Gorecki will preside. Visitation will be held at Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Dorchester, on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will also take place Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Preston Rau, Zachary Rau, Andrew Rau, Tyler Rau, Arik Rau and Garrett Rau. Burial will take place at the North Memorial Cemetery, Dorchester.
