Strey, Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. (Golden - 28 October 1959)

Two hundred relatives and friends gathered at Zion Lutheran Church, Town of Grant, Saturday to celebrate the 50^th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Strey, pioneer residents of Washburn, Grant and York, who had the happy experience of having their 11 children present with their families for the event.

Robert Strey was born May 16, 1880, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Strey, three-fourths mile south of the present Walter Schmidt Cheese Factory in the Town of Grant.  In his youth he attended the Roder School.

Anna Thomas was born in Germany September 27, 1887, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Thomas. When she was nine months old she came with her parents to America and located for a time in Indiana.  When she was nine years of age she moved to Washburn Township with her parents, locating three and one-half miles south of Cannonville corner.  She attended the old Washburn School.

On October 28, 1909, they were united in marriage by the Rev. Mr. Reif in the log cabin home of her parents.  They were attended by Matilda Strey and Rinald Viergutz.  After a brief honeymoon the couple took up house-keeping on an 80 acre farm in the Town of York, six miles north of Granton, where they made their home for 37 years and where 11 children were born, all of whom are living.

In 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Strey moved to the village of Loyal leaving the operation of the home farm to their son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Strey.  Mr. Strey loved farming in his active years, and Mrs. Strey built her life around the home and her church.  They have been members of Zion Lutheran Church of the Town of Grant for 50 years, and Mrs. Strey has been active in working with women of the Church.

The 11 children are: Elsie Fricke of Milwaukee, Ernest Strey of Spencer, Helen Domine of Loyal, Hazel Seeman of Wilson, Eralen of Augusta, Raymond of Granton, Victory of Granton, LaVern Schneider of Milwaukee, Norma Potter of Spencer, Ceylon of Milwaukee and Robert, Jr., of Milwaukee.

There are 32 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

One hundred fifty relatives and intimate friends attended the anniversary dinner Saturday noon at Zion Lutheran Church, and approximately 50 others attended the reception in the afternoon. The ladies of Zion church served the dinner and luncheon.  The Rev. Lawrence E. Schreiber, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, delivered an anniversary sermon in the church Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the children and their families the following out-of-town relatives and friends attended: Mr. and Mrs. Otto Gessner of Kewaskum; Mrs. Elizabeth Cwiklinski, Walter Kreatsch, Mr. and Mrs. John Kobs, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thomas, all of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Thomas and daughters of Pence; Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Fazel of Viola; Mr. and Mrs. Bud Orsburn of Greenwood; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hohenstein of Nekoosa; Mrs. Paul Kustealleo of La Salle, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Gotter of Withee; Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Kasper of Abbotsford; Mr. and Mrs. Celon Gotter and Mr. and Mrs. Milan Matanic of Loyal; Mr. and Mrs. Leland Sargeant of Northfield, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Seeman of Wilson.

The Rev. and Mrs. l. E. Schreiber were special guests.
