Hediger, Clara (Scholarship - 1985)
Clara Hediger, daughter of Charlotte Schneider, Neillsville, based on her
outstanding academic record, has been award a United Church of Christ (UC)
Pastor’s-Presidential Scholarship, worth $3,000, and a Kohler Foundation
Scholarship, worth $1,500, to attend Lakeland College this fall.
UCC Pastor’s-Presidential scholarships are awarded to new Lakeland students who
are members of a UCC congregation, have been nominated by his or her pastor, and
have held a grade-point average of 3.5 or better at their previous schools.
Kohler Foundation scholarships are awarded to students who have been recommended
by a Lakeland faculty member, based upon a 3.0 grade-point average or better.
The $1,000-per-year UCC Pastor’s-Presidential and the $500-per-year Kohler
awards are renewable if the student maintains these grade-point averages,
Hediger graded within the top 10 of her class from Neillsville High School in
1984. She was listed in “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” for two
years, was a member of the German Club, and served as captain of the cross
country and track teams. She is transferring to Lakeland, where she will major
in early childhood education, from the Child Care Program at District One in Eau
Claire.
Lakeland is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of
Christ. Founded in 1862, the college serves around 900 students and is located
about 10 miles northwest of Sheboygan.

Announcement is made of the engagement of Donna Heil, Marathon, daughter of Rita
Heil and the late Walter Heil, to Richard Kuhn, Neillsville, son of Ernest and
Jean Kuhn. Donna is employed at Neillsville Memorial Hospital and Richard is
farming at Neillsville. A June 1985 wedding is planned.

Koula, Cindy (College acceptance - 1985)
Cindy Koula, daughter of Dennis and Merna Koula, 120 W. 20th St., Neillsville,
has been accepted to attend the 6th Annual Science Summer Institute at the
UW-Eau Claire campus, July 8-19. She has enrolled in experimental psychology,
one of the 12 courses offered. Sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire and the Eau Claire
Association for High Potential Children, Inc., the institute is designed to
develop the full potential of aspiring young scientists, aged 12-16.
Each course includes 50 hours of instruction and laboratory activities, and
enrollment is limited to 18 students. “The emphasis of all our courses is on the
laboratory and ‘hands on’ activities,” says Dr. Juanita Sorenson, director of
the institute.
Students must be recommended by two teachers or advisors. More than 200
students, from 90 communities, will study this year at the Science Summer
Institute.

Koula, Eric (National Award Winner - 1985)
Eric Koula, son of Dennis and Merna Koula, 120 W. 20th St., Neillsville, and
grandson of Carl and Leola Preuss, Ogdensburg, has been named a 1985 United
States National Award winner in art. He is a student at Neillsville High School.
Nominated by his art instructor, Mr. Meurett, Eric’s selection was based on
academic performance and dedication to excellence and achievement. His biography
will appear in the nationally published United States Achievement Academy
Official Yearbook.

Steiner, Ann (P.E.O. Scholarship - 1985)
Ann Steiner, Salutatorian of the class of Granton High School, has been awarded
a $200 scholarship by the P.E.O. Sisterhood of Neillsville. Steiner, who plans
to major in business at UW-Eau Claire, was selected on the basis of scholarship,
extracurricular activities, and character. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Francis Steiner of Granton.
This is the first scholarship offered by Neillsville’s P.E.O. chapter which was
organized in September 1984. P.E.O., a philanthropic, educational organization
encourages education through its Educational Lund, Cottey College, International
Peace Scholarships, and Program for Continuing Education.

DeMert, Debbie Lea (11 May 1985)
Fr. Joseph Henseler officiated during the 1:30 ceremony, Saturday, May 11, at
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Neillsville, joining Debbie Lea DeMert and James
Allen Spiegel in marriage. The bride, daughter of Beverly and James Raine, 415
W. 5th, Neillsville, was escorted down the aisle by her father to the
accompaniment of organist Ronald Resong and vocalist Bill Elmhorst. Gerri and
Gabby Schultz are parents of the groom.
Attired in a long sleeved, lace appliqued white dress with sweetheart neckline
trimmed in sequins and seed pearls, the bride carried a bouquet of pink, white
and purple roses. Her maid of honor, Shelly Pulju, Madison, attendants Mrs.
Randy Butts, Mrs. Jeff Miller, Mrs. Roger Langreck, all of Neillsville, and Miss
Kay DeMert, La Crosse, wore off the shoulder lavender print chiffon dresses,
trimmed in lace. Their silk bouquets held lavender roses and mums. Lacy Beyer
served as flower girl escorted by ring bearer Joshua Butts.
The groom’s white tuxedo was complimented by those of the best man, Jim Smagacz,
Neillsville, groomsmen Jeff Miller, Randy Hediger, Lee Reinart, all of
Neillsville, and John Urlaub, Marshfield, who were dressed in silver. Wedding
guests were escorted in on the arm of Kevin DeMert or Randy Butts.
Following the nuptials, a reception was held at the Wild Cat Inn and a dance at
the American Legion Hall. After a wedding trip to Florida, the newlyweds will
reside at 511 West 7th St., Neillsville.
A graduate of Neillsville High School in 1982, and Mid-State Technical
Institute, Wisconsin Rapids, in 1983, the bride is a cosmetologist at the
Carousel Beauty Salon, Loyal. The groom is a 1979 graduate of the same school
and is a construction worker for Tesmer Construction Corporation.

Kernz, Susan Marie (25 May 1985)
Rev. Howard Ott performed the May 25 2:30 p.m. marriage ceremony, at United
Methodist Church, joining Susan Marie Kernz and Douglas Lee Oldham as husband
and wife. Susan is the daughter of Mrs. Irene Kernz, Rt. 4 Neillsville, and
the late Phillip Kernz. Douglas is the son of mr. and Mrs. Walter Oldham, 1017
Grand Avenue, Neillsville.
Edward Kernz, brother of the bride, escorted her to the altar while accompanist
Ronald Resong and vocalists Stacey Holt and Dawn Thoma performed.
Bridal attendants were Cindy Meyer, Neillsville, who served as maid of honor,
and bridesmaid Kristine Kernz, of Neillsville. Attending the groom were bestman,
Mike Toelle and groomsman Dennis Oldham, both of Neillsville. Guests were
escorted into the church on the arms of ushers Tom Stankey and Ray Immerfall.
Following the ceremony, a dinner and reception was held at the Neillsville
American Legion, with dancing later at the Silver Dome Ballroom. Wedding
photography was provided by Strack Photography, of Neillsville.
The couple are both 1982 graduates of Neillsville High School. Douglas is
employed at Nelson Muffler. They are making their home in Neillsville.
