4-H Speaking Contests (Speech Winners - 1960)

An address lauding farming as one of the most exacting businesses on the modern scene, and upbraiding-farmers who express a feeling of inferiority, won for Sandra Ewert of Colby the Clark County 4-H speaking contest in Greenwood last Thursday night. 

Sandra’s talk was straight from the shoulder, and she referred to the comment she said she had heard among her farm friends many  times: "After all, I’m just a dumb farmer."

She pointed out that farming is an honorable profession, requiring more know-how than many businesses, and that the "just" farmer has every reason to take pride in his work.

She parried, pointed, and sometimes "loaded" questions from members of the Greenwood Rotary club, and from the judges: Dr. William Olson and Wilbur Stewart of Greenwood, and Frederick Mett, a Milwaukee attorney.

First award in the junior division was won by Margaret Bowe of Greenwood, a member of the Prosperity Pea Pickers club, in close competition with three other area winners.

Other placings in the senior division were: second, Robert Missling of the Longwood Center 4-H; third, Elvina Tichy of Christie, Happy Valley 4-H; and fourth, Allen Lund, Thorp 4-H.

Second place in the junior division was won by Robert F. Lesniewski of the Thorp Rockets, and a two-way tie for third place was won by Jacquelin Butterbrodt of the Chili 4-H and Kristi Potocnik of Owen, Park’s Happy 13.

Miss Ewert is eligible to complete in the state contest as a result of her win.
