Chmaj, Sophia #2 (1870 - 8 APR 1957)
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Francis Piekarski, assisted by Rev. C. Chilicki and Rev. Eugene Knopka, at St. Hedwig’s Church at 10:00 o’clock Thursday, April 11th, 1957 for Mrs. Sophia Chmaj, 86, who passed away at the Stanley hospital on April 8th, 1957.
Sophia Krzystofik was born in Poland in 1870. She was united in marriage in Poland in 1887 to John Truhan, who passed away in 1897 in Chicago.
Her second marriage to John Chmaj took place Jan. 21, 1900 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Chicago. After a short trip to Poland they returned and settled on a farm in the Township of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), where they resided for many years. Mrs. Chmaj was preceded in death by her husband in 1921, two sons and one daughter.
She was a member of the Holy Rosary Society of St. Hedwig’s Church. Surviving are three daughters, Anna Truhan, Mrs. Nick Skwierczynski, and Helen Chmaj, Mrs. Louis Papierniak of Thorp, and Mary Chmaj, Mrs. Frank Pydo of Chicago; two sons, Albert Chmaj of West Allis and Walter Chmaj of Chicago, 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
