Tanner, Rev. I. J. (13 February - 20 April 1960)

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from Calvary Lutheran Church for the Rev. Idar J. Tanner. The body will be taken early Saturday afternoon to St. Paul, Minn., for burial in Hillside Cemetery.

Rev. I. J. Tanner, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church in Neillsville, died early Wednesday morning.  He had been ill two weeks, after suffering a severe heart attack April 5; but had spent a ‘good’ day Tuesday and those close to him had believed he was on the road to recovery.

Both Rev. Tanner’s son, Rev. Ira J. Tanner of Greenwood, and his father, Rev. Jakob Tanner of Waldorf College, were attending a Lutheran conference in Minneapolis at the time of his death.

Arrangements for services were awaiting their return, and will be made by Georgas Funeral Home. (Those details are at the head of this obituary).

Rev. Tanner came to Neillsville with his wife about there years ago to assume active charge in the establishment of a new church and congregation here.  The church’s first conformation class was nearing its confirmation, and members of the congregation said that the Rev. Tanner had looked forward to that day with great anticipation.

Rev. Tanner was born in Iowa February 13, 1897, and was one of four members of his family to enter the ministry.  His brother, The Rev. Agnar S. Tanner, is pastor of an American Lutheran congregation in Pasadena, Calif.
