County Spelling Contest (May - 1960)
The best spellers of Clark County’s grade and rural schools will compete in the second annual county spell-down in the courthouse here Saturday morning. The contest is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
They will be competing for the right to enter the state contest May 21, and for the traveling trophy which was won last year by Jean Lindgrin of Loyal.
In the rural sections, the best school spellers competed in group contests with those from seven to 12 other schools, according to Leonard Morley, county superintendent of schools, whose office is in charge of the event. The winner of the group contests will be among the contestants, as well as representatives of the village and city school systems of the county.
Winners who had been selected earlier this week included these from the county’s rural schools: Arden Wagner, Busy Bee School; Karen Borstad, fifth and sixth grades, Granton; Donna Thomas, Sunnyside; Marlene Hansen, Hewettville; Dennis Galarowicz, White; Jim Hill, Midway; Danny Gehrke, Park; Matty Nikolai, Oak Grove; Russell Ratsch, Kurth; Janice Boie, Ricky Run; and Janice Red Eagle, Dells Dam.
