Broeren, Mary (2 JAN 1865 - 22 JUN 1957)

A very early pioneer, Mrs. Mary Broeren (known to all of thorp as "Grandma Broeren") passed away quietly of old age infirmities on Saturday, June 22, 1957 at her home in the city of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.).  She was born in Hollandtown, Wis., Jan. 2, 1865, to Martin and Ellen Van Able, the second oldest and the last survivor of a family of 13 children.

On Nov. 1^st, 1890 she was united in marriage to Theodore Broeren in Hollandtown.  Shortly after their marriage they moved to Portland, Oregon, where they lived for seven years, then, with their three children they moved on a farm south of thorp in the town of Reseburg, which is now owned by their son, Robert.  In 1933 they moved to the city of Thorp.  Grandma will never be forgotten for her kindness.  Her smiling face and gentle voice will always be remembered.  She was always willing to give a helping hand to those around her.  Her husband Theodore died in 1941 and a son Ted Broeren died in 1953.  Left to mourn are six sons, Ben, Bloomer, Frank, herb and Robert, Thorp, Elmer, Boyd, Henry, Tiskilwa, Ill., and three daughters, Harriet Pagel, Thorp, Anne Clancy, Milwaukee, Ceal Carney, Springfield, Mass., 39 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 25, 9 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Father A. M. Muckerheide officiating.  She was laid to rest in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Thorp.  Pallbearers were John Hickman, Alfred Kass, John Grabon, Stanley Zawacki, Frank Schmidt and Victor Grajkowski.  Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funeral of Mrs. Mary Broeren were Mrs. Nell Van Abel, Donald Van Abel, John Broeren, Gilbert Broeren, Celia Micke and Mr. and Mrs.  Henry Hoovner, all of Hollandtown, Mrs. Blanche Van Deuran and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Van Deuran of Green Bay, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Broeren and Mr. and Mrs. Quentin Broeren of Tiskilwa, Ill., Mrs. Anne Clancy, Joe Clancy, Mrs. Chas. Horn and son and Mr. and Mrs. Hank Pagel of Milwaukee, Mrs. Wm. J. Carney, Springfield, Mass., Donald Broeren of Colorado, Mrs. Helen Broeren and sons Jack and Jim and daughter Carol and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rossmiller and Chas.
