Struensee, Joe (90 Tons of Hay - 1960)
Octogenarian puts up 90 tons of Hay old-fashioned way - With energy and stamina which belies his 80 summers, Joe Struensee of the Town of Levis this year has put up 90 tons of hay from 40 acres in the old-fashioned way - by hand.
Struensee hauled in 50 loads, which was more than enough to fill the barn. He had to have some of it baled and stacked by the driveway - a total of 619 bales.
The only help he had was from a grandson, Warren, 15, who drove the tractor.
The scene on the Struensee farm, one and one-half miles east of the Meadow View Tavern, was far different from the normal scene on Clark County farms, where balers and choppers take care of the crop with a minimum of back-breaking hand work.
Of this crop, Mr. Struensee said it was the best he has had in more than 50 years on the farm, and that its quality is unusually good.
Mrs. Struensee commented: "It was so hot, I was afraid he’d keel over."
He looked pretty strong and healthy Tuesday, though.
