Big Corn Contest (Tall Stalk - 1960)

Entries are coming slowly in to the Big Corn Contest, now being conducted by The Clark County Press.

In the tall stalk division only one entry has been received, that from Hans and Robert Kalsow of Rt. 3, Neillsville. Despite the fact that it is the only entry thus far, the stalk is one which would have given the entries in last year’s contest a good rub for the prize.

Weather conditions, and with corn still growing, have been unfavorable for entries.  Farmers apparently are putting off their entries, hoping that another inch or two will be achieved.  There is plenty of tall corn in Clark and Northern Jackson counties, despite a poor start.  On the whole the crop will be much more satisfactory than anyone had reason to expect when it was planted.

To date there is no entry in the big ear division of the Press’ annual corn contest.  Ear corn has dented; but it still has not hardened, and entries are expected within the next week.

The contest is open to all farmers in Clark and Northern Jackson counties, in both the tall stalk and big ear divisions. Entry is free.  Just bring it to The Clark County Press office, or send the entry along with a friend.

Three prizes are offered in each division.  Top award in each is a year’s subscription to The Clark County Press.  Second and third prizes in each division are six months’ subscription.
