Deer Hunters (Lucky Hunters - 1960)

Postmaster Mike Krultz reported seven deer for seven hunters in his group, which included Krultz and his two sons, Michael, 16, and Robert, 18; Donald Braatz and Tony Erpenbach of Neillsville; and Jack and Jim Knaus of Milwaukee.  "We had eight for eight hunters in 1959," said Krultz.

Successful deer hunters included: Ray Strangfeld, William Vetrone, Jim Vincent, Clifford Winter, Marvin Pischer, Raymond Wedekind, George "Buddy" Barten, Bernard Walker, Anthony Tolaney, Walter "Buster" Brown, Brian Schmidt, Jim Hauri, James Chadwick, Byno and Harold Lloyd, Edna Mohr, age 13, Victor Schlinkert, Louis Dux, John Sollberger and his grandson, Larry Kolbrak, Albert and Ernest Sollberger; Percy Zickert, Ronnie Heinhold, Wendell Ziegler, Forest Klueckmann, Louis Ziegler, Bobbie Garbisch, Lyle Humboldt, Ken Waller, David Pozega, age 15, "Chuck" Volk, age 16, John Bradshaw, Douglas Buddinger, Fred McCarty, Wallace Quicker, Norman Vanderwyst, of the Neillsville and Granton area.

Others taking bucks in Clark County last week included: Herman Zastrow of Watertown, Harvey Schultz of Hampshire, Ill.,, George Sinnett of Richland Center, William Mickett of Greenwood, Louis Slock of Eau Claire, Glen Fremstad of Whitehall, and two friends of Martin Cooper of Green Bay.

A guest of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Kluckhohn of Edgerton took home a 10-point buck.  Jack Kluckhohn got shooting but missed.

Three Ripon hunters went home without a buck, but they had one call on them at their tent one night during the season.  The deer got tangled in a wire, which held the stove pipe. The deer pulled the chimney over.

William Thiel said he counted 70 deer on cars coming north on the main Pray roads the first day.  He counted eight the second day, and very few thereafter.

While hunting near his farm at Bruce Mound, in Dewhurst, Rudolph Novak shot a 13-point buck with an antler spread of 23 1/8 inches. (Mr. Novak won the $10 prize at H. H. Van Gorden’s.)

Jack Kane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kane, shot a buck off the same stump Saturday, making his record 11 bucks in 12 years.  He was hunting on the Wood-Clark County line in Sherwood.

Wilson Bohnhoff, after giving up on a buck for this year, shot one last Thursday as it came across a field near his home in the Town of Hewett.  He had been hunting several times and decided this was not his year.

Neil Coulthard, who lives at Sherwood corners, got a buck last Thursday near his home.
