Bullard, Ernest (letter explaining death - 3 Nov 1913)
Monday morning W.C. Bullard received a letter explaining the nature of the gunshot wound which caused his son, Ernest’s, death, mention of which was made in these columns. It seems that while Ernest’s company was stationed at Fort Reingold, Texas, his roommate became engaged in a quarrel with two soldiers and Ernest stepped between them and separated them. The belligerent soldier, who had been drinking, left the room and a few minutes later returned, opening fire on the occupants with a revolver as he entered. One of the bullets struck Bullard and two other of the soldiers were wounded. Bullard died about four hours later from the effects of his wound. There being no embalmer within a hundred miles, the remains of Mr. Bullard were interred at Fort Reingold, but will be later brought here for burial. The letter which Mr. Bullard received informing him of the circumstances attending his son’s death, was a very nice one and much appreciated by the parents of the young man. In it, it stated that a half finished letter written by Ernest to his mother, had been found in his room and it was enclosed to Mrs. Bullard.
