Mary L. Denk, 98, Loyal, died on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at the Guiding Hand home, in Marshfield. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 7, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal. Rev. James Logan officiated. Burial followed in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Terry Schoonover, John Anderegg, Bruce Bremer, Darak Hutchinson, Adam Newcomer and Dick Scherer. Honorary pallbearers were Bonnie Richardson, Brenda Bremer, Susan Denk, Susan Turnquist, Jill Gregorich and Nicole Holm.

 

Mary Lauretta Scherer was born on July 2, 1912, in Jonesdale, the daughter of George Sr. and Anna (nee Ducey) Scherer. Her family moved to Greenwood when she was 2 years old and purchased a farm. She was raised and received her education in the Greenwood area, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1930. She married Leonard F. Denk on Nov. 23, 1935, at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwood. They lived in the Clark County area until purchasing their own farm just north of Loyal in 1946. In 1958, they bought the A&W Root Beer stand in Loyal, which they owned until 1972. In 2003, they moved into Loyal, and after Leonard’s death, she moved to Marshfield and resided at the Guiding Hand home until her death. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and it’s  Altar Society, and loved reading, Playing cards, dancing and bowling.

 

She will be dearly missed by eight children, Sharon (Allen) Schoonover, Loyal, Diane (Gerald) Anderegg, Loyal, LaVonne (Charles) Dragon, Hamilton, Ohio, Patricia Denk, Marshfield, Kathleen (Lawrence) Hutchinson, Stratford, Linda (Robert) Newcomer, Woodbridge, Va., Jeffrey (Kate) Denk, Long Beach, Calif., and Gordon Denk, Marshfield; 33 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Leonard, on May 6, 2007; three children, Krista, Kenneth and Terrance; one grandson, Jimmy Lee, in infancy; one great-granddaughter, Jyllian Pieper; three brothers, Francis Scherer, George Scherer Jr., and Raymond  Schere , and one sister, Celia Bremer.
