Floyd B. Romens, 80, of Hayward passed away quietly in his sleep Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at Golden Valley Living Center in Hayward.

Floyd Bernard Romens was born April 15, 1930, and good naturedly endured the resulting "tax day/birthday" ribbing from then on.  He was born at home in Goodrich, the firstborn of the late Sylvester Francis Romens and Mary Ann (Marie) Weiler.  He had seven siblings.  He married Joan Lucy (Friemoth) Romens Feb. 25, 1954, who went to the Lord Aug. 6, 2009.  They have six children.

Floyd served with honor in the Korean War as an artillery sergeant. He was discharged in 1953 and went to work on his education at UW-Madison.  After school, he worked in the HVAC, eventually building Midwest Heating and Air Conditioning into one of the premier HVAC companies in Madison.  He was a noted and respected businessman, active in his home church of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, and an avid card player, golfer and sportsman.   He was a lifelong member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.  He eventually retired to Neillsville with Joan in 1994 and spent many happy years between there and Hayward, fishing, hunting and enjoying a wide circle of friends and family.  Upon Joan’s death, he moved permanently to Hayward to live with his son Jeff.

He is survived by his two sons Jeff (Joyce) Romens of Hayward and their children, Carrie Romens and Alissa (Romens) Dryer, and Gregg (Suzi) Romens and their children Tyler and Andrew Romens of Colorado Springs, CO; four daughters, Linda (Marc Steinberg) Romens of Taos, NM, Kathryn (Don) Hawkins of St. Augustine, FL, Janet (Mike) Roessler and their children Nicole, Stephanie and Kyle Roessler of Cross Plains, and Margaret (James Horton) Romens of Columbus; and by one great-grandson Jonah Roessler, son of Nicole Roessler.  He is further survived by three sisters: Marion Romens, Jeannie Ticsay and Marcy (Ray) Neilsen; and two brothers, Ken (Donna) Romens and Caroll Romens.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother and sister: Lois (Charles) Jahne and Lee (Beverly) Romens.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville. Father Joseph Follmar will be the celebrant.  Providing music will be Ronald Resong, organist, and the St. Mary’s Choir.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday prior to the service at St. Mary’s Church.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Neillsville Veterans Council.

Serving as Casketbearers will be: Jeff Romens, Gregg Romens, Tyler Romens, Mike Roessler, Ken Romens and Marc Steinberg.
