Walter Joseph Woytowicz, 92, of Gilman, died on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at he Gilman Care Center. He was born on March 2, 1918, in Lublin to the late Walter and Stella (Zaba) Woytowicz. Walter grew up there and went on to work as a logger and later in Chicago. There he was recruited into the Army where he fought bravely in the Pacific Theater. Walter returned to the area and managed Miller Dam Tavern for a few years. He married Margaret Bagnowski on July 8, 1967. He farmed in the Gilman area until his retirement; Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margaret Woytowicz of Gilman; one step-daughter, Sarah (Larry) Olejniczak of Holcombe; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ted (Mary) Woytowicz; and two sisters: Bernice (George) Budrus of Mosinee and Lottie Nowicki of Wausau. Walter is further survived by numerous nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers; Edward, John, Milton and Stanley; and sister, Jean Zajac.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 14, 2011, at St. Mary’s Polish National Church in Lublin with Father Marian Talaga and Father John Kutek co-officiating. Burial followed in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Lublin American Legion Post 547. Visitation was from 2 until 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Gilman Funeral Home and from 9 until 10 a.m. on Monday.
