Edward Clemenes Bertz, 58, Mayor of Loyal, died of a heart attack which occurred at 9:15 Tuesday morning while he was taking in stock at Willard.

 

Funeral services will be held at 9:39 a.m. Friday in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Norbert King will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Mtre Funeral Home from Wednesday afternoon until the time of the funeral. A general Rosary service will be held at 9 p.m. Thursday.

 

Edward Bertz was born in the town of Ashippun in Dodge county October 12, 1894. At the age of one and one-half years he came with his parents to Clark county to live on a farm south of Loyal.

 

He was married to Florence Hannan at Loyal, June 25, 1924, and since then has lived in Loyal.

 

Mr Bertz served as a board member for the village of Loyal for several years and when. The village became a city he was chosen for its first mayor, and has held that office continually since. He was also a member of Loyal Industries.

 

He is survived by his wife, seven children, Edward, Jr., Norbert’s Abbey, West Depere; John R. Loyal; Genevieve, Carol, and Connie, at Mount Mary College, Milwaukee; and Thomas and Mary Ellen at home, one grandchild; and his mother, Mrs. Mary Bertz, Loyal.

 

Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. T. H. (Frances) Slone, Sarasota, Florida; Mrs. Alfred (Alice) Haas, St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Robert (Evelyn) Eggersted, Skokie, Ill.; Mrs. Robert (Gwendolyn) Strathman, Colby; and six brothers, Joseph, Milwaukee; John, Greenwood: and Rueben, Pat, Leo, and Jerome, Loyal.

 

Three children, one sister, and his father preceded him in death.

Final services were held last Friday for Mayor Ed Bertz who was the victim of a heart attack while at work in Willard a week ago Tuesday.

 

Assisting the Rev. Norbert E, King in the solemn requiem mass were the Rev. T. G. Fox and the Rev. F. Joliquer, both of St. Norbert’s College, West DePere.

 

Two sons of the deceased also participated in the requiem ceremony. They are Edward Jr., who is preparing for the priesthood at St. Norbert’s College, and Thomas, both of whom served at the MSS.

 

The active pallbearers were Lothar Oestreich, Elmer Sterr, Otto Stock, Lawrence Davel, Ed Rogstad, and Henry Rottjer.

 

Honorary pallbearers were Frank Degenhardt, Milan Matanic, Harold Tucker, Harvey Brussow, Dick Gorter, Maynard Erickson, Kenneth Weyhmiller, Byron Zepplin.

 

The St. Anthony’s Church Choir sang with Sister M. Virginia as organist.
