Haslow, Gust (Barn Fire - 17 SEP 1955)
A bolt of lightning hit the barn of Gust Halow last Saturday during an early morning electrical storm and completely destroyed the barn, some bled hay and a combine that were inside.
The barn was a 30 by 60 foot structure located on the former Phillip Kissinger property and the loss was estimated at $5,000, part of which is covered by insurance.
Because they were unable to rouse the Spencer Fire Department immediately, a call came into the assistant fire chief here, Lothar Oestreich. Since the property is located beyond the township limits, the local truck cannot be used. However, Oestreich responded to the call, driving his own auto quickly to the scene, and upon his arrival the mass of timbers caved in, spelling an end to the barn.
Reports say that the entire barn was ablaze the second the lightning hit, and the Spencer department, which arrived on the scene, was too late to save anything.
