Winters, William J. (3 October 1872 - 5 October 1961)

 

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon from the Bergemann Funeral Home for William J. Winters, 89, of Tripoli, who died Thursday in Wausau.  The Rev. Frank B. Harcey of the United Church of Christ officiated.  Burial was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.

 

Mr. Winters, a former resident of the Shortville area, was born, October 3, 1872, at Shortville.  He was the son of the late John M. and Sarah (Hitchcock) Winters.  He received his education in the Shortville School and on November 7, 1900, was married to the former Adeline Moldenhauer in Lynn.

 

He worked with his brother, Tom Winters, in the Shortville Store for a few years before he left for Tripoli, where he served as postmaster for 25 years, until his retirement in 1942.  Mr. Winters was a member of the National League of District Postmasters.  Upon his retirement he was made an honorary life member.

 

He also served as treasurer of Tripoli and was a member of the Tripoli School board for many years.

 

He is survived by a son, Leon of Tripoli; and three daughters, Mrs. Elsie Lorenzen and Mrs. Irene Mittlestadt, both of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Anton (Adeline) Marheine, Tripoli.  Other survivors include 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Tom, of Neillsville.

 

Pallbearers were six grandsons: K. Lorenzen, Anton, Douglas and Phillip Marheine, Bruce Spinney and Lawrence Von Gnechten.

 

Out of town people here for the service included: Mr. and Mrs. Leon Winters, Tripoli; Mr. and Mrs. Anton Marheine and family, Tripoli; Mrs. Elsie Lorenzen and Mrs. Irene Mittlestadt, Milwaukee; K. Lorenzen, Rhinelander; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Von Gnechten, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Spinney, Phillips; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moldenhauer, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Moldenhauer and Miss Doris Moldenhauer, all of Granton; and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Felser, Tripoli.
