Farmers Halt Forced Sale In Cark County
Several Hundred Join In
Demonstration Against Foreclosure Sale of Farm Near Chili
Neillsville, Wis. -- (UP --Action on forced sales of farm
properties was halted at least temporarily in Clark county today as
a result of & demonstration by several hundred
farmers which prevented sale of tne John Noble farm near Chili.
Leaders of the protesting group, including E. J. Laufenberg, Wood
county chairman of the Farm Holiday association, yesterday demanded
of Sheriff William Bradford that they be permitted to confer with
Circuit Judge E. W. Crosby. The judge, however, did not
appear.
There was neither violence nor threats at yesterday's
demonstration.
County officers, in the belief no bids would be forthcoming when
Noble's property was put up, decided to postpone the sale pending a
conference with the state banking department.
A schedule foreclosure sale on the Fred Jakobi farm also was
postponed.
Noble's property is mortgaged to the closed State Bank of Chili,
now being liquidated.
Unsuccessful efforts had been made to arrange with the bank for
payments on Noble's mortgage, farm leaders said. They also said
bank officials refused to cancel Noble's obligation with proceeds
from the sale.
A crowd of several hundred farmers assembled in front of the
courthouse here and stated their opposition to Sheriff
Bradford. A larger crowd, estimated at from 500 to 1,000,
gathered at the Noble farm. The demonstration was said to
have been planned at a meeting of Farm Holiday leaders from Clark,
Wood and Marathon counties last week. They informed
authorities her yesterday they would continue to oppose forced
sales of farm property.
