Matter, Walter E. (23 JUN 1917 - 8 APR 2011)


SPENCER -- Walter E. Matter, 93, of Spencer, passed away peacefully Friday, April 8, 2011, at Ministry Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.


Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. The Rev. David DePaoli will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at the Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home in Spencer and again from 10 a.m. until service time at the church Thursday. Interment of ashes will be in the West Spencer Cemetery at a later date.


Walter was born June 23, 1917, in Spencer, the son of Edward and Bertha (Mellenthin) Matter. Walter was united in marriage June 23, 1943, to Delores M. Sautner in Marshfield.


He farmed in rural Spencer, worked for the Farmer's Co-op, drove gas truck for Midland Co-op and retired as head custodian from the Spencer School District in 1983.


Walter was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, where he ushered for many years. He also was a volunteer firefighter for the Spencer Fire Department for many years. Walter especially enjoyed family outings at the cabin in Phillips. He was an avid Packers fan, and also enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting and baseball. Walter cherished the time he could spend with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


He is lovingly survived by his wife, Delores; his children, Michael (Barbara) Matter, Appleton, Peg (Brian) Gehrke, Marshfield, Joseph (Patty) Matter, Spencer, and Jennifer (Bryan) Nehring, Green Bay; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Matter, Howards Grove. He further is survived by nine grandchildren, Kimberly, Christopher, Stephanie, Lindsay, Andrea, Michael, Sean, Chelsea and Marissa; two stepgrandchildren, Vaughn and Christina; six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He will truly be missed.


Besides his parents, Walter was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; a brother, Orville; and two sisters, Lorena and Frances.


A memorial will be established in Walter's name.


The family would like to thank the staff at Golden Living Center-Three Oaks and Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital sixth floor staff, for the tender and compassionate care he received.
