Bertz, Joseph  (13 JULY 1896-29 OCT 1953)

 

Funeral services for Joseph Bertz, Jr., 57, were held in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church here Monday morning at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Norbert King officiating.

 

Mr. Bertz who was a resident of Milwaukee died early Thursday morning, Oct. 29, at Veterans’ Hospital, Wood, Wis., his death being the result of a lung ailment from which he had been ill for about a year.

 

He was a veteran of World War l, and members of American Legion Post No. 175, served as pall bearers. They were Perry Volk, Henry Boe, Jesse Raab, Chester Smith, Edd Dobbe, and Verland Kauffman.

 

Grave-side military rites were conducted by the local American Legion Post. The military escort under Squad Commander Kenneth Kanneberg, were Norman Miller, George Zuehlke, Robert Lulloff, William Lulloff, Norman Lempke, Delbert Lyon, Lloyd Zimmerman and Morvin Benidict. Tommy Wepfer sounded taps.

 

Burial was in the parish cemetery. A general rosary service was held at the Myre Funeral Home Sunday evening

 

Mr. Bertz was born July 13, 1896 at Rubicon, Dodge county. He received his education in Loyal. Most of his life he engaged in farming in his vicinity, but 12 years ago he moved to Milwaukee where he worked for a construction company. Mr. Bertz never married.

 

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Joseph Bertz, Sr., of Loyal, and four sisters, Mrs. T. H. (Frances) Slone, Sarasota, Fla.; Mrs. Alfred (Alice) Haas, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. R. W. (Evelyn) Eggerstad, Skokie, Ill., and Mrs. Robert (Gwendolyn) Strathman, Colby; Also five brothers, Reuben of Berlin; Leo, Pembine; Harold (Pat) Loyal; John, Greenwood; Jerome of Loyal and Chicago. His father, one sister and one brother preceded him in death.

 

Relatives from away who came for the funeral were Mrs. Alfred Haas, Seattle; Mrs. R. W. Eggerstad, Skokie, ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Bertz and daughter, Donna, Berlin; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Strathman and children, Greenwood, and Leo Bertz, Pembine.
