Kalina, Dorothy Louise (10 February 1930 - 9 April 2011)

 

Dorothy Louise Kalina, 81, of Merrillan died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Pine View Care Canter surrounded by her family and in the care of Black River Memorial Hospice.

 

Dorothy was born Feb. 10, 1930, in Neillsville to Fred and Ella (Weeks) Subke.  She graduated from Neillsville High School.  Dorothy married Martin Kalina May 20, 1950, in Dubuque, IA. Together they farmed in rural Neillsville for 13 years.  in September 1973, Dorothy began working for the U. S. Postal Service.  In June of 1978 she became postmaster in Merrillan. She retired from the post office in May of 1992.

 

Dorothy enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and she was a world-class solitaire player. She was an active member of the Alma Center VFW Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as treasurer for many years. She was a volunteer in the Black River Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, worked as an election official for the Town of Alma and was a member of St. Mary’s Altar Society.

 

Dorothy is survived by her five wonderful children, Brenda (Larry) Gates of Eau Claire, Martin (special friend Jodi) Kalina, Jr. of Humbird, Steve (Diane) Kalina of Merrillan, Christ (special friend, Walt) Kalina of Albany and Barb (Jerry) Meacham of Merrillan. She is further survived by nine grandchildren, Bobby Jo, Preston, Gwen, Kerry, Kally Joe, Aaron, Hannah, Logan and Stephanie; and seven great-grandchildren, Sadie, Lilly, Gabe, Ryan, Ava, Emma and Molly.

 

Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Martin Aug. 20, 1006.  She is also preceded in death by an infant daughter and three brothers: John, Fred Jr., and Robert.

 

Visitation for Dorothy was held Thursday, April 14, 2011, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at he Jensen-Modjeski Funeral home in Hixton. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, 2011, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Alma Center. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Neillsville.
