Rhoades, Bertha (? Jan 1914)
A new method to defeat the new marriage law turned up last week at Chippewa Falls when Peter Berg and Miss Bertha Rhoades were united in marriage by affixing their signatures to a marriage contract. The groom had appealed to the Chippewa doctors, but they refused to sign the marriage license without making the Wasserman test at a cost of $20. He and the bride talked the matter over and decided to get married by contract. The supreme court has ruled that that kind of a marriage is legal and binding and several have already taken place in the state since the new law went into effect.
