Kops, Frank (arrest - Feb 1914)

Frank Kops is in the county jail under $500 bond awaiting a trial in circuit court.  He is charged with a variety of offenses such as forgery, obtaining money under false pretenses, etc.  A couple of weeks ago Kops came here with E.W. Bauman to engage in the restaurant business in the old Crystal theater building.  Bauman is from Minnesota and it is charged that Kops secured $100 from him under the pretense of having bought a restaurant at Altoona.  This did not materialize and the two gentlemen came here.  Bauman charges that Kops still has his $100.  Last week Bauman charges that Kops opened a letter belonging to him and in which was enclosed a check for $24 for the sale of some mink hides and that he endorsed Bauman’s name and secured the money on the check.  A preliminary hearing was given Kops and he was bound over to circuit court.  Kops is a resident of Columbia.
