Griebenow, Clara (11 FEB 1881 - 25 JUN 1960)
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Clara Griebenow on Tuesday, June 28th at St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church with Dean Brandt of Eau Claire officiating. Interment was made at the Riverside Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were J.R. Barager, Paul Fricke, L.E. Bulgrin, Harold Kuehn, Carl Holverson and Gene Sutter.
Mrs. Clara Griebenow, one of the pioneer residents of the Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) area, passed away June 25th, 1960 at the age of 79 years. Mrs. Griebenow had been an invalid for a number of years.
Clara Griebenow, nee Bauman, was born in 1881 at St. Cloud, Wis. in Fond du Lac County. The family moved to Kiel, Wis., which was her home until her marriage. She attended Oshkosh Normal School and taught in the Kiel and Sheboygan schools. Among her pupils was Hebert Kohler.
She was married in 1904 to Oscar Griebenow, also of Kiel. In 1906 the couple moved to Withee, where one of the two hardware stores of the Griebenow brothers was located. After several years, the family moved to Owen where Mrs. Griebenow resided until her death.
Three children were born to Clara and Oscar Griebenow. Two daughters, Ellen and Amalia, and one son, Alfred, who died in 1918.
Mrs. Griebenow was very active in local affairs while her health permitted, being a member of the Women’s Club, the Study Club and her church. She was a charter member of St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church and an Altar Guild member. She was active and interested in all activities pertaining to young people and was a charter member of the Owen Band Mothers.
Mrs. Griebenow lived alone after he husband’s death in 1945, but spent her last years at the home of her daughter, Ellen, until her final illness.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Ellen) Hughes of Owen, and Mrs. Fred (Amalia) Schelhorn of Toledo, Ohio, and seven grandchildren. Three brothers living are: A.O. Bouman of Wilmette, Ill.; R.H. Bouman of Chicago, Ill., and G.E. Bouman of Evansville, Ind.
