Funeral services for Mrs. L.W. Smiley of Curtiss (Clark Co., Wis.) were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Christian Alliance Church, Curtiss. The parish pastor, Rev. James Stone, officiated, with burial being made in the family lot at Pine Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Ed Krause, Wilfred Marcott, Grant Herrick, Alfred Thompson, Neal Green and Robert Green.
A resident of Curtiss for the past 41 years, Mrs. Smiley won the admiration of all with whom she was associated and devoted much of her time and efforts to her church.
Bertha Ellen Smiler, nee Buchanan, was born Sept. 18, 1885 in St. Charles, Iowa. She took her vows in the Presbyterian Church when a young girl at Winterset, Iowa. On Dec. 18, 1907 she was united in marriage to Leon W. Smiley at St. Charles, Iowa. Twelve years later the couple moved to Curtiss where she has since made her home in the Town of Mayville.
Her passing is mourned by her husband, two sons, Leland of Stanley and Donald of Wausau; one daughter, Mrs. Duane (Mary) Bulgrin, Owen; three sisters, Mrs. William (Lucy) Hall, Medford, Mrs. Ray (Mae) Grant and Mrs. Carl (Bessie) Carlson of Iowa; three brothers, Otis Buchanan, who lives in Iowa, Floyd Buchanan, Abbotsford, and Glenn Buchanan, Withee; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One son, Lester, lost his life while serving with the armed forces in Italy during World War II in 1943.
