Schenk, Elise #3 (25 DEC 1860 - 2 MAR 1941)

Elise Stampfli was born Dec. 25, 1860 in Langenthal, Canton Bern, Switzerland.  She grew to young womanhood in her native land, and in 1890 immigrated to the United States, settling in Green County, Wis.

On Feb. 28, 1893 she was united in marriage with Gottfried Schenk, and to this union were born three children, one daughter, Frieda, and two sons, Max and John, the latter dying in infancy.

Several years of their married life was spent near Monroe, and then in 1897 they moved to Clark County, locating near Day’s Corners.  In 1898 they moved to Fairview, where they operated a cheese factory for several years, and then moved to a farm a mile north of Humbird.

Mr. Schenk died May 10, 1915, and for several years following Mrs. Schenk remained on the farm, moving to her residence in the village twenty-one years ago.  She was spending a few weeks with her daughter and family, where she had the misfortune of falling and injuring her hip and arm.  She was taken to the hospital at Black River Falls, where she died March 2, 1941, having attained the age of 80 years, 2 months and 5 days.

Deceased is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Paul Zerbel, her son, Max Schenk, six grandchildren, and also many other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Schenk was a lifelong member of the German Reformed church, and was a member of St. John’s Church in this village for many years.

Funeral services were held at the church Wednesday afternoon of last week, the Rev. W.W. Bixler of Neillsville officiating.  The choir, Mrs. A.F. Hahn, Mrs. W.E. Waters, Misses Dorothy and Genevieve Nibbe, sang: "The Old Rugged Cross," " Face to Face," and "Nearer My God to Thee."  The pastor used as the text for his sermon the words of the first epistle of John 2:25, "And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life."  Burial was in Mentor Cemetery.
