Kelsh, Ruth (Art Award - 9 OCT 1941)

Last Thursday Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Feutz took the three winners from this vicinity, in the Helen Mears art contest - Ruth Kelsh, 1st prize winner, Gerald Oliver, Merrillan, and Jahala Noble, Black River Falls, honorable mention awardees - to Green Bay where the presentation of the awards was made before the great convention of the Federated Women’s Clubs of Wisconsin.

Although continuous rains allowed no sightseeing trips, the students were most royally entertained in the hotel where the convention was held.  These 8th graders contested against all the larger schools in the state in the Class B Division.  Madison, with a professional art instructor, won in Class A.

Ruth award was a very fine volume containing copies in color of 100 famous world’s masterpieces, and a school award was an art volume containing copies of 150 famous paintings.  The prize winning picture by Ruth, the "400" eastbound at the depot, is to be framed and kept in the school.  It will be on display at the school carnival next week.

The trip to Green Bay was a rather strenuous one, leaving here about 4:00 a.m., arriving at the convention at 9:30, and home again at 7:30 p.m.

Next year’s art topic is, "What I Love Most in America."
