Bruce C. Thiel, 87, Greenwood, died on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Greenwood. Rev. Joseph Follmar officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary;s Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Greenwood American Legion Post #238. Pallbearers were Doug Drost, Mike Klune, Dick Adler, Joe Tolaney, Tom Abel and John Hermanson. Honorary pallbearers were Vernon "Bud" Smith and Wilbert Adams.
Bruce Charles Thiel was born on Feb. 23, 1924, in Plum City, the son of Charles and Mamie (nee Suter) Thiel. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at a country school near Plum City. As a young man, he moved to New York and worked in the shipyards for a year. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on May 26, 1944, and served in the naval air force until his honorable discharge on March 5, 1946. He returned to Plum City and hauled milk for a short time before moving to Greenwood and working at Wuethrich’s Creamery. He married Delores Klune on Feb. 3, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Greenwood. He then worked as a carpenter for Pathfinder Homes in Spencer, and later at Greenwood Homes, retiring as a foreman in 1974. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Greenwood American Legion Post #238. He had many interests, but especially loved going to church, music, Sunday rides and his little trips, playing marbles on Sunday afternoon, socializing, fishing, hunting and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Delores, Greenwood; one son, James Thiel, Greenwood; two granddaughters, Nichole Felix and Amanda Thiel; one sister, Selma (Duane) Erickson, Sacramento, Calif.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sandra K. Felix; one grandson, Andrew Thiel; and two brothers, Gordon and Arlen, in infancy.
