Baumgartner, Jacob #4 (21 SEP 1872 - 24 FEB 1942)

Jacob Baumgartner was born Sep. 21st, 1872 at Engi, Canton Glarus, Switzerland.  There his childhood was spent and he was baptized and confirmed in the Reformed faith, of which he was a lifelong member.

In the year of 1888, the family immigrated to America, settling in eastern Iowa, near Wheatland, where he grew to young manhood.

On Aug. 27th, 1893, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Duerr at Harbine, Neb.  To this union one daughter was born.  They made their home in eastern Iowa, near Wheatland, for several years, and then lived for eight years in Kossuth County, in Western Iowa.

In the spring of 1906 they came to the vicinity of Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.).  He was on the farm for many years, and then on account of the ill health of Mrs. Baumgartner, moved to this village, and was in the employ of the canning factory for more than twenty years.

After the death of his wife, and being in poor health, he made his home part of the time with his daughter and family, where he passed away from all earthly trouble and pain on the evening of Feb. 24, 1942, after months of intense suffering, having attained the age of 69 years, 5 months and 3 days.

He was a faithful member of the consistory of St. John’s Church for many years.

Left to mourn his passing are his daughter, Mrs. John Greub Jr., and family, and one brother, M.B. Baumgartner of Greenwood, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held from the home of his daughter and at St. John’s Church, Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. H.M. Burt, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. B.M. Friesenborg of Greenwood, who officiated in the German language.  Interment was in Mentor Cemetery beside his wife.  Relatives and friends from away who came to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Baumgartner of Greenwood; J.J. Baumgartner of Fall Creek; John Baumgartner and son Walter of Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hoegger, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Bradseth, of Rice Lake; Albert and August Willer of Big Rock, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Ecke of Mondovi.
