Sloth, Leora R. (25 MAY 1917 - 3 JUN 2011)

 


Leora Ramona (Christensen) Sloth was born May 25, 1917, in Oakfield Township, Audubon County, Iowa, to Leroy and Helen (Johnson) Christensen. She passed away peacefully at the Clark County Health Care Center in Owen on Friday June 3, 2011, at the age of 94 years and 9 days.


Leora grew up on the family farm and attended school at Viola Center Consolidated School, rural Audubon County, Iowa, graduating with the class of 1936. On Aug. 11, 1940, Leora was united in marriage to Iver Sloth. To this union one son, Leroy, was born. They operated several farms in the Viola Center, Iowa, area until moving to a rural farm in Greenwood in 1961. In 1963 they purchased a farm in rural Owen. Iver passed away May 6, 1986. Leora continued to reside at the farm until moving to the Health Care Center in August 2008.


Leora was a homemaker and always had a large vegetable garden processing the fruits of her labor by canning and freezing her crop. Also, she liked to bake, making many loaves of bread as well as cakes and desserts. She helped Iver on the farm with milking, livestock feeding and field work. She liked putting puzzles together and sewing. She was a master at the sewing machine, making her own clothing as well as shirts for her husband and son. She kept in touch with family and friends sending many letters and cards over the years.


Leora was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a brother Harry Christensen, three sisters-in-law, Ellen Christensen, Shirley Christensen, Louise Sloth, and a brother-in-law, Earl Sloth.


She is survived by her son Leroy and wife, Dorothy (Anderson) of Owen, a step-granddaughter, Donisha Cosby of Burns, Oregon, a brother-in-law, Dale Sloth of Audubon, Iowa, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.


Services will be held at Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen on Tuesday June 7, 2011 at 1 p.m. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. just prior to the service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Withee, immediately following. Pastor Kenneth A. Dix will officiate.


Pallbearers are David Fredrick, Glen Hardrath, Joe and Daniel Stiemann, John Gardner and Carl Kallberg.
