Grap, Mrs. Gustave ‘Anna’ (11 September 1872 - 1 May 1962)

Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Grap, who spent nearly 72 years of married life together, will be buried together following double funeral services at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Globe today (Thursday).

The service will be conducted at 2 p.m., with the Rev. J. Ruege, pastor, in charge. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Grap, 89, died at the home of Mrs. Alice Grap, in Neillsville about 7 p.m. Tuesday. She had arrived here from Milwaukee a few hours earlier to attend funeral services for her husband, which had been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Arriving about 2:30 p.m. with her two daughters and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Chopp and Mrs. Robert Lemke, all of Milwaukee, she had visited the Georgas Funeral home, where the body of her husband lay. Apparently standing up very well under the ordeal, she returned to the Alice Grap home and decided to rest before the evening meal. She was stricken there by a heart attack - one of several she had suffered in the last two years - and died.

Mr. Grap died Sunday at the age of 94 in Milwaukee and his body had been brought here for service at the church in which he and Mrs. Grap were married nearly 72 years ago. They had been residents of the Globe area for 52 years, starting their married life in the Town of Seif in a log cabin.

A native of Germany, Mr. Grap was born October 19, 1867, the son of Ferdinand and Wilhelmina (Schultz) Grap.  He came to the United States with his parents at the age of 15, and the family located on a farm in the Town of Weston.

Mrs. Grap was the former Anna Hemp, daughter of Ludwig and Augusta (Scheel) Hemp, who was born September 11, 1872, in Jefferson. With other members of the family, she moved to the Globe area and attended schools in that area. She was the last member of a family which numbered seven brothers and a sister, and also served for a long period as the Globe area correspondent for The Clark County Press.

Mr. and Mrs. Grap left the farm in 1943 and moved to Milwaukee, where they made their home with the Chopp family; but they frequently returned to Neillsville and maintained their wide acquaintanceship in the area.

They were married November 23, 1890.  Mr. Grap was active in town and church affairs throughout his active life.

Surviving are seven children: Edgar and Ernest Grap, Mrs. Lemke and Mrs. Chopp, all of Milwaukee; Delbert of Connersville, Ind.; Mrs. Cy (Helen) Reindel of West Allis; and Erwin of Greenwood.  Also surviving is a brother of Mr. Grap, Ferdinand Grap of Neillsville; eighteen grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren also survive.

Four children preceded them in death; Velma, in infancy, Franklin, Leo and Harvey Grap; and a sister, Mrs. Ole (Gusta) Lowe.

Double funeral services were held May 3, from the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Globe for Mr. and Mrs. Gus Grap, 94 and 89, who died April 29 and May 1. The Rev. J. G. Ruege officiated and burial was made in the church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Wayne, Clarence, Robert, and Alvin Grap, Donald Reindel and Walton Sither.

Mrs. J. G. Ruege directed the church choir as it sang, "A Haven of Rest" and "I Would see Thee."  Mrs. Clarence Wegner was organist.
