Charleston Max Briggs was born July 4, 1890 at Cedar Falls, Wis., a son of Howard and Harriet Briggs.  He came with his parents to Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.) in 1913, and has been a resident here continuously since, with the exception of short periods of time away.

For the past couple of years he had been employed in Eau Claire.  About five weeks ago he suffered a stroke and later pneumonia developed, causing his death on Feb. 8, 1944, at the Sacred Heart Hospital in that city.  He attained the age of 53 years, 7 months and 4 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing away, one sister, Eula of Humbird; and three brothers: Allen of Eau Claire, Keith of Oakland Calif., and Laurence of Humbird, and many friends.  His father and mother preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Frederick J. Smith of Augusta, at the Methodist Church in this village, at 2:00 o’clock on Friday afternoon, Feb. 11th.  Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Waters sang: "Old Rugged Cross," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "Lead Kindly Light," with Miss Simons accompanist.  Pallbearers were W.A. Fradenburg, Perl Pickett, J.A. Johnson, Peter Fradenburg, A.M. Olson, and R. J. Stuve.  Burial was in Mentor Cemetery.  Those from away attending the services were Allen Briggs and family, Eau Claire, and Mrs. Ralph Wittren of Colby.
