Jenswold, Pvt. George F. #3 (31 JAN 1910 - 20 SEP 1944)
"Taps" from the bugle closed the memorial service for Pvt. George Jenswold at the Methodist Church last Sunday morning, after the Legion’s prayer and the flag presentation to the parents of the deceased by Dr. Schwarz, chaplain of the post.
The church was well filled with Legionnaires, members of the Auxiliary, neighbors and friends of the family, several coming from a distance to attend. An impressive service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. R.W. Sachtjen, and a fine tribute was given to the young man in his address. The musical selections were: "Near the Cross," "Home of the Soul," and "Jesus, Savior Pilot Me," by Mrs. W.E. Waters, Mrs. Will Theiler, and W.F. Hein.
George Frank Jenswold was born Jan. 31, 1910, in Duluth, Minn., the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Jenswold. He lived with his family in Duluth until he was about sixteen years of age, when they moved to Rockford, Ill., and four years later came with them to the farm north of this village (Humbird, Clark Co., Wis.).
He volunteered for military service in the United States Army in Oct. 1940, and received his basic training at Camp Custer, Mich. His last furlough home was in Oct. 1941. He went overseas in Jan. 1942, and the family heard regularly from him, until the receipt of a telegram from the war department stating that he was killed in action in France on Sept. 20, 1944. George attained the age of 34 years, 7 months and 20 days.
Besides his parents, he also leaves to mourn his passing, two brothers, Gordon of Milwaukee, and Walter of Chicago.
The relatives who were here to attend the memorial service were his two brothers and their wives, and Mrs. H.R. Wittren and children of Altoona.
