Davel, Mr. and Mrs. Albert (60th - 8 October 1962)
Sixty years of wedded life were observed Sunday by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Davel of Loyal. The memorial day began by Mr. and Mrs. Davel attending high mass in St., Anthony’s Catholic Church with their grandsons, Michael, Timothy, John and Patrick Phair, Oshkosh, and Peter Davel of Loyal, serving as altar boys. Mixed summer flowers adorned the altar.
Mr. Davel was born October 31, 1874, in Germany and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Davel. After coming to America he attended schools in Spencer, and clerked in Loyal stores until he started the Davel store in 1907. This he operated until 1947, when he sold the store to his son, Lawrence Davel, who still operates it.
He is affiliated with St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, joined the Knights of Columbus in 1915 and became a 4th degree Knight in 1920. He was president when Loyal was still a village, also was village treasurer and se3rved on the school board for a period of 40 years. He was a volunteer fireman for over 40 years, has been very active in community affairs. His hobby is baseball and he is an avid Braves fan. Mr. Davel, active for his age, makes daily walks in downtown Loyal.
On October 8, 1902, Mr. Davel was married to Florence Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Baker. The marriage took place in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The Rev. George Burhardt performed the original wedding ceremony. Both Mr. and Mrs. Davel attended mass daily.
Mrs. Davel was born August 15, 1880, in Seymour and was graduated from the Loyal High School with its third graduating class. She taught rural schools near Loyal prior to her marriage. She is a member of St. Anthony’s and St. Mary’s Altar societies of the church, and belongs to two card clubs. Mrs. Davel is in good health, and like her husband, has been active in community affairs.
Mrs. Davel is the recipient of a corsage of white orchids and Mr. Davel a white carnation.
Mr. and Mrs. Davel are the parents of 11 children, all living, and Sunday was the first time the family had a reunion since their golden wedding in 1952. All of their children were present with the exception of one daughter, Mrs. James Babb of Long Island, N. Y.
They have 38 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
