Shirk, Alma (10 AUG 1953 - 4 JUL 2011)

 


CURTISS -- Alma Nolt Shirk, 57, of Curtiss, died Monday, July 4, 2011, at her home.


She was born Aug. 10, 1953, in Denver, Pa., to John S. and Esther S. (Nolt) Martin, who in 1975 moved to Withee, Wis.


Alma married Elam K. Shirk in Lancaster County, Pa., on Dec. 13, 1979, and later moved to Curtiss. She and her husband owned and operated Willow Lake greenhouse, and opened their home up for treatment foster care through Teipner Treatment Homes of Jefferson, Wis. At the present time, she was a homemaker, and in addition, she and her husband were treatment foster parents for ANU family services (formerly Teipner Treatment Homes).


Alma was a member of Sunny Ridge Old Order Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference) of Withee.


In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Stephen M. (Louise Ann Nolt) Shirk and Elam M. Jr. (Rosetta B. Zimmerman) Shirk; one daughter, Susan M. Shirk at home; and four grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Rufus N. (Anna) Martin and Alvin N. (Vera) Martin, both of Withee; and eight sisters, Naomi (Noah Earl) Hoover and Eva (Allen Z.) Horning, both of Thorp, Emma (Raymond) Brubaker of Denver, Pa., Elizabeth (Special Child) of Thorp, Rebecca (Nelson H.) Martin of Withee, Barbara (Mahlon K.) Shirk of Owen, Mary (Jesse M.) Brubaker of Withee, and Mabel (Robert) Klein of Waupaca.


A visitation of the family is to be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., all Thursday at the home of Elam Shirk Jr., W4313 Willow Road, Owen.


Funeral services are to be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Sunny Ridge Old Order Mennonite Church, Curtiss, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.


The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
