Neillsville Graduate Jacob Kopp Achieves Childhood Goal (2023)
Jacob Kopp, Neillsville High School 2023 graduate, has been accepted into
UW-Madison’s Badger Marching Band and will play in the band’s first performance
Sept. 2. Submitted photo
By Edward DuBois
Neillsville High School’s class of 2023 graduate, Jacob Kopp, was accepted to
the UW-Madison Badger Marching band Aug. 19.
“I’ve wanted to go to Madison ever since I was a little kid,” Kopp said. “I’ve
always loved the campus and the energy around it. Another huge dream of mine was
to be a part of the University of Wisconsin marching band which now has [come]
true.”
Kopp is known locally for his baritone saxophone accomplishments and with the
Wisconsin State FFA Honor’s Band.
At UW-Madison, Kopp’s intended major is Wildlife Ecology.
Kopp will be one of 282 members of the elite Big 10 Marching Band under the
direction of Dr. Corey Pompey.
“The reason I wanted to pursue music in school was because I saw the band play
at sporting events and I thought it was something I wanted to do,” Kopp said. “I
started in middle school on alto saxophone which eventually led me to switching
to baritone saxophone and I continued to play that throughout high school
whether it be in the Cloverbelt All-Conference Band or the State FFA Honors
Band.
“I am looking forward to playing at as many sporting events here in college as
possible.”
The Badger Band is known for their famous Run Out and spring concert
performances, along with the gameday Badger Bash and “5th Quarter” performances
at Camp Randall.
Kopp will play the trumpet for the band, rank 8. The process to be in the band
is grueling and is a four-and-a-half day process, said to be harder that Badger
football tryouts, known as “Reg Week,” including an online audition prior to a
field audition.
“The application process for the band was one of the hardest things that I have
ever done,” Kopp said. “First, I had to submit an online application where I had
to play a few different music pieces.
“The in-person application took place over the course of a week. We practiced
three times a day, every day, until that Saturday where the actual audition took
place.
“I eventually made the band where I made the switch to trumpet where I will be
for the rest of my college years.”
Now accepted, Kopp has two weeks to learn a completely new instrument to him,
memorize music and learn field performances.
The Badgers kick off the first game of the season, Saturday, Sept. 2 at Camp
Randall.
