La Fluer, William (horse runaway accident - 1 May 1914)

Last Friday afternoon William La Fluer met with a runaway accident which came near terminating fatally to him.  He was just starting for his home north of Christie, driving three horses and with his wagon loaded down with shingles.  Just south of the O’Neill creek bridge on Hewett Street, a bunch of shingles slipped down from the load and scared the team and they started to run.  La Fluer was thrown from the wagon and struck on his head and shoulders.  He was rendered unconscious by the fall and was thought that he had suffered a concussion of the brain.  He was carried into H.J. Brooks’ home where he received medical attention promptly.  No broken bones were discovered and there seemed to be no indication of any more serious injury than a severe bruising and shaking up.

George Howard also had a runaway accident last week at Granton when he was thrown from a load of baled hay by his team getting frightened at the starting up of a train.  Howard was thrown under the train and was rendered unconscious by the fall.  It was a very fortunate accident for Mr. Howard in that the train which was switching on the track at the time was at that moment standing idle.
