Laffe, Alice Lorraine (29 May 1921 - 1 July 2011)
Alice L. Laffe, 90, of Eau Claire, formerly of Black River Falls, died Friday, July 1, 2011, her family at her side, at Our House Memory Care under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice.
Alice Lorraine Lastofka was born May 29, 1921, in Clark County to George F. and Clara F. (Wendt) Lastofka. She was raised in the Humbird area and graduated from the Humbird High School. She later attended secretarial school in Minneapolis.
She married Sheldon H. Laffe July 6, 1946, in Neillsville. The couple first lived in Wisconsin before moving to Minneapolis and then to Iowa. They lived in Montezuma, IA for many years. Upon retiring, they moved to Black River Falls in 1985. They later moved to Eau Claire.
Alice was first employed by Poweshiek County Courthouse before becoming a long-term employed at the Montezuma State Bank. She soon became known for her willingness to help others. Alice was very active in community and church activities and committees.
Alice and Sheldon were members of the United Methodist Churches of Montezuma and Black River Falls. She was also an active member of the Alma Center Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Post 8484 Auxiliary of Alma Center and the Jackson County Homemakers.
Alice was well known for her smile and caring attitude. She was very creative and enjoyed tole painting, needlework, quilting and other crafts. She loved to bake (especially pies and sweet rolls), sew, garden (particularly flowers), travel, camp and fish.
Survivors include her husband, Sheldon; one son Shelly (Joyce) Laffe of Charles City, IA; two daughters, Sharri Omer of Houston, TX and Shawn (Melvin) Seuferer of Eau Claire; five grandchildren, Jeremy Omer, Jessica Omer, Kendra Laffe, Kira Laffe and Anna Seuferer; two great-granddaughters, Myra Marie and Aracelli Sophia; one sister, Rose (Francis) Michels of Alma Center; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Buswell Funeral Home in Black River Falls, with visitation one hour prior to the services. The Rev. Rodney Venberg officiated. Private family committal services will be held at the Mentor Cemetery in rural Humbird at a later date.
