Newton, George F. #1 (8 JUN 1876 - 6 OCT 1947)

Death took two members of an esteemed family within a week, the one, Mrs. Margaret Newton Kruckeberg, after many years of illness and hospitalization, and the other, Fred Newton, without a moment’s warning.

Margaret, a daughter of John W. and Olivia Newton, the fifth child of a family of eight, four sons and four daughters, was born at Merrillan Feb. 16, 1880, and passed away in a hospital at Williston, N.D., Oct. 1, 1947.  After growing to young womanhood, graduating from Merrillan High School with the class of 1900, for a number of years following she was a teacher in Jackson County and in Montana, and then located in Williston.  She was employed as bookkeeper for the Bruges Mercantile Co.  In 1912, she was united in marriage with George Kruckeberg, and her home was in that city.

About twenty years ago she suffered an illness which left her an invalid, suffer much pain at times, until death came to her release.

She was brought back to the home of her childhood for burial.  Services were held in the Merrillan Church last Friday afternoon, Rev. E.J. Sachtjen officiating, and Eastern Star services at the grave in Oakland Cemetery.

Mrs. Kruckeberg was a member of the Eastern Star at Williston, having joined the order in Humbird before going west.  She was also a member of the Congregational Church of that city and served as its secretary and treasurer for eight years.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. M.K. Ohnstad of Sharon, N.D., and Mrs. Herman Fenske of Tomah, and one brother, Samuel R. of Humbird.

George Frederick Newton, older brother of Mrs. Kruckeberg, died suddenly about 7:30 last Monday evening, at his farm home near Alma Center.  He was in an upstairs bedroom dressing to attend the lodge meeting at Merrillan when the final summons came.  Bert Hanby, with whom he was to ride had stopped at the home and was visiting with Mrs. Newton, when they heard a disturbance upstairs and hastening to learn the cause, they found him lying on the floor.  He had expired before they reached his side.

Funeral services under Masonic auspices are held at the Methodist Church in Alma Center this Thursday afternoon, and interment will be in the cemetery adjoin that village.
