Newton, George F. #2 (8 JUN 1876 - 6 OCT 1947)

 

"But now is Christ risen from the dead," I Cor. 15:20, was the sext and the thought expressed by the Rev. E.J. Sachtjen in the sermon at the funeral services for George Frederick Newton, at the Methodist Church in Alma Center last Thursday afternoon.  Many friends from different places were in the congregation which filled the church.  A great mass of beautiful floral emblems were banked about the casket and altar of the church.  Mrs. Robert Wright and Mrs. Ted Joos sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Sometime We’ll Understand," with Mrs. Olive Blencoe accompanist.  Burial rites at the East Lawn Cemetery, Alma Center, were under the auspice of the Humbird Masonic Lodge, and were conducted by Robert Wright.  Pallbearers were Louis V. Hayden Sr., Harry Van Gordon, Bert E. Hanby, John Gansel, Nordahl S. Fristad, and Dr. Benedict Melby, of Blooming Prairie, Minn., who was a boyhood friend of Mr. Newton’s.

 

George Frederick Newton was born at Omro, Wis., June 8, 1876, and died at his home near Alma Center, Wis., Oct. 6, 1947, at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 28 days.  He was the third child of John and Olivia Newton.  When a small child the family moved to Paine’s Mill, three miles north of Merrillan, and in the year 1884, they moved into Merrillan.  There he attended the schools, graduating with the class of 1894.  Entering the teaching profession, he taught several schools in Jackson County, and later teaching in North Dakota.  In 1906 he attended Mayville normal, receiving his degree from that college.  He was principal of several school before becoming county superintendent of schools of Steele County, in North Dakota.

 

In 1907, Mr. Newton was united in marriage with Miss Nellie Jones, of Sherbrooke, N.D.  To this union were born five children, four sons and one daughter.  They made their home in North Dakota until 1918, when the family moved to Wisconsin.

 

After being in the teaching profession for thirty years, he retired.  Since then, with his sons, he has been engaged in farming in the vicinity of Alma Center.  Reared in the Christian home, he was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, always taking an active part in church activities.  He joined the Masonic order in 1899 at Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.), and has taken an active interest in the fraternity for forty-eight years.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brotehrs, and two sisters.  Mourning his passing are his wife, Nellie; sons Willard of Alma Center, Ellsworth of Merrillan, Kenneth of Homet, Calif., George Jr. of Alma Center, and one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Tichey of Greenwood; one brother, Samuel R. of Humbird, and two sisters, Mrs. Mayme Ohnstad of Sharon, N.D., and Mrs. Ethel Fenske of Tomah.  There are eight grandchildren, five nieces and two nephews.
