York Center (11 March 1910)
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bardell who were married recently, left last week for their home in North Dakota where Mr. Bardell has charge of a large farm.
John Lastofka is busy sawing out material for the addition to his barn. He has rigged up a mill himself and his engine to furnish the power.
Charlie Smith and family from Pleasant Ridge were here Wednesday to attend the meeting of the ladies aid which was held at the home of Wm. Rowe.
Mr. Emling of Spencer, assisting by John Vandeberg sold several stave silos the past week to York farmers.
Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Campbell returned home Monday from their visit at Stanley and Humbird.
Earl Lawrence of Plymouth is spending a few week’s here with his mother and other relatives.
Walter Graves has a huge pile of sand and stone ready for a basement which he intends to build this spring.
Ed Begley, Sr. has been getting material ready for a silo.
E. G. Rowe and family, Mrs. I. Fulwiler and Mrs. Jennie Fulwiler were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Lee last Fri.
Rev. Kildow presented the slums of Chicago in the M. E. Church last Wed. with magic lantern views. Misery caused by drink was vividly portrayed.
Mr. Bert Gullick, part owner of the cheese factory and bride arrived here Thursday morning from Dodgeville where they were married the day before. Although they are strangers in this vicinity we bid them a hearty welcome among us. We take the following from a Dodgeville paper: "Married by Rev. A. S. Gilbert at the M. E. parsonage in this city on Wednesday, March 2nd, Mr. Bert Gullick and Miss Bessie Rowe, both of the Town of Dodgeville."
A very interesting meeting was held at the York Center cheese factory Wednesday afternoon. Nearly every farmer of the surrounding territory was present. Richard Free was chosen chairman and Ernest Rowe secretary of the meeting. After some good lively discussion regarding the wants and wishes of the patrons, the following business was transacted; Mr. Heibel was elected secretary and John Vandeberg treasurer. It was agreed to pay Mr. Heibel 1 ¾ cents for making cheese and 3½ cents for making butter. Two covers are to be purchased to be used in transporting cheese and the product of the factory is to be insured with the Lynn Mutual Fire Insurance Co. Mr. Heibel was chosen as salesman and Richard Free, Joseph Rondorf and Art Flint as auditing committee. To our knowledge it was the most interesting and beneficial cheese meeting that was ever held in this vicinity. Messrs. Heibel and Gullick, proprietors of the factory, seem to take the right steps for advancing the dairy interests of this vicinity and no doubt will get a good patronage. The next annual meeting will be held the first Monday in January, 1911.
