Census Taker "Questions" (15 April 1910)
The Census-taker, who will commence the enumeration of the population of the Town of Grant as a part of the U. S. Census, on April 15th, will ask many questions. Some of these questions will answer themselves, but others will need some thought on the matter. The thirty-one questions to answer are as follows:
1. Location; 2. Location of family; 3. Name of each person whose place of abode on April 15, 1910, was in his (this) family; 4. Relationship of person to head of family; 5. Sex; 6. Color or race; 7. Age at last birthday; 8. Single, married, widowed or divorced; 9. Number of years of present marriage; 10. Children, number born; 11. How many living; 12. Place of birth; 13. Place of birth of father of this person; 14. Place of birth of mother of this person; 15. Year of immigration to United States; 16. Naturalized or alien; 17. Speak English, if not what language; 18. Trade or profession; 19. General nature of industry in which person works; 20. Employer, employee or working on own account; 21. Out of work, April 15, 1910; 22. Number of weeks out of work during 1909; 23. Able to read; 24. Able to write; 25. Attended school any time since Sept. 1, 1909; 26. Home owned or rented; 27. Home free or mortgaged; 28. Farm or house; 29. Survivor of union or confederate army; 30. Blind; 31. Deaf or dumb
Besides these questions which are to be asked in every home, every farmer will be subjected to 59 sets of questions relative to produce, livestock, etc., raised on his farm.
The Postal Department has sent out advance schedules to every farmer and these forms and instructions should be read carefully and you are to write down the answers to all questions that apply to your farm, and to keep it until the enumerator comes. By doing this you can save much time and contribute greatly to the success of the agriculture al census.
(Note: I have typed these up because if you have a blank to fill in for a census of many years ago you’re your genealogy’ at the top of each column is some very fine print and usually unreadable unless magnified. Dmk)
