Walk, Paul (Store burns - 20 SEP 1905)

Wednesday evening about 7 o’clock Paul Walk, who was in the store at that time and about to light his pipe, had the lighted brim stone fly from the match and into a bale of cotton, igniting the cotton and causing an immediate blaze, which spread with such rapidity that before help could arrive, it was beyond control.  4 streams of water were turned on and into the building almost immediately, and kept there for 2 hours; but the fire demon was not so easily quelled, and the contents of the building are thought to be a total loss.  The building is badly wrecked and Anton Unger’s shoe store next door south suffered a considerable damage.  The City Hall building to the west took fire, but beyond a liberal scorch it is not seriously damaged, some dozen of the City Library books were soaked up.  The Walk store and contents were insured through Grow, Schuster and Co.
